Inside Medicinal Mushrooms: Understanding β-Glucans, Polysaccharides & Triterpenes

Medicinal mushrooms are chemically complex organisms containing a diverse range of naturally occurring compounds. Their biological activity is not attributed to one single “active ingredient.” Instead, researchers study several groups of compounds, particularly polysaccharides, β-glucans, and triterpenes. The amount, structure, and biological activity of these compounds can vary significantly between mushroom species, cultivation conditions, extraction methods, and final preparations.

β-Glucans — A Major Focus of Immune Research

β-glucans are naturally occurring glucose polymers found in the cell walls of many fungi, including medicinal mushrooms. Researchers are particularly interested in how β-glucans interact with immune-recognition receptors and influence immune-cell activity.

Preclinical studies have investigated their interactions with macrophages, dendritic cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and other components of the immune system. These findings have made β-glucans an important area of research into immune modulation and host-mushroom interactions.

Polysaccharides — A Diverse Molecular Family

Mushroom polysaccharides represent a broad family of complex carbohydrates, with β-glucans forming an important subgroup. Their biological effects may depend on characteristics such as molecular weight, branching pattern, sugar composition, and molecular structure.

Researchers have investigated mushroom polysaccharides for potential immunomodulatory and antitumor effects, although much of the evidence remains based on laboratory and preclinical research.

Triterpenes — A Different Chemical Family

Triterpenes are chemically distinct from polysaccharides and β-glucans. They are particularly abundant in some Ganoderma species, including Reishi.

Laboratory research has explored triterpenes in relation to pathways involved in cell growth, apoptosis, migration, and other aspects of cancer biology. However, laboratory findings should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that a mushroom extract can treat cancer in humans.
